The town of Leatherhead and its neighbouring villages of Great and Little Bookham, Fetcham, and Ashtead lie at the top of the North Downs in the Surrey Hills. They share the River Mole with the town of Dorking and other villages to the south, together forming what is now Mole Valley District. But they once formed a district of their own and for more than 70 years, the Leatherhead & District Local History Society has provided the first point of contact for anyone fascinated by the way this little part of England has changed both in living memory and centuries past.

The Society owns and manages Leatherhead Museum, produces regular publications and has its own library and a large archive collection of research sources. It also hosts lectures and other events throughout the year, mainly - but not exclusively - at the Leatherhead Institute in Leatherhead High Street.
